Green crackers explained: what they are and how to spot genuine ones
By Genuine Crackers · Updated 21 October 2026
Since the Supreme Court's 2018 order, only green crackers may be sold in India. Here is what that means when you buy.
What is a green cracker?
Green crackers were developed by CSIR–NEERI (the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute). They use reduced or substitute chemicals and are designed to cut particulate emissions by roughly 30% compared with conventional crackers. They still sparkle, crackle and light up the sky — just with less smoke.
How to spot genuine green crackers
- Green logo: genuine boxes carry the green CSIR–NEERI logo.
- QR code: boxes have a QR code you can scan to check the product.
- Licensed seller: buy from a shop with a PESO explosives licence and GST registration. Ours: licence E/SS/TN/24/307(E111695), GSTIN 33ADYFS7714A1ZW.
What the 2018 order says (in short)
- Only green / reduced-emission crackers may be sold.
- Joined crackers (long series / “laris”) are not allowed.
- Online sale is not allowed — you can book online, but the sale is completed offline by the licensed shop. That is how Genuine Crackers works.
- Local authorities set the hours when crackers may be burst — check your state or district's notice for Diwali.
